Individuals receiving SSDI benefits are automatically enrolled in Medicare after 24 months of benefit entitlement. Those who are applying for medicare based on age may do so during their Initial Enrollment Period, which occurs around your 65th birthday. If you are still working at age 65 and covered by your employer’s health insurance, you may enroll in Medicare when you stop working. This is considered a Special Enrollment Period. If you failed to enroll during your IEP or GEP, you may enroll during the annual General Enrollment Period, which occurs in January – March each year. A diagnosis of End Stage Renal Disease or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) allows enrollment at any age without the 24-month SSDI waiting period.
